Petrified Wood Slice

Petrified Wood Monkey Puzzle Tree slice, from Madagascar, triassic age, measuring approx 70mm x 54mm x 13mm. A fossil which forms when a tree dies and the organic matter is gradually replaced by Quartz, and dates back hundreds of millions of years. The colours come from the different elements in the mud/water from when the wood was petrified. Found in many locations but most famously in the Petrified Forest in Arizona, USA.
